The Hunian Grace: from where I’m sitting

When I was little, my mom taught me to say grace. Everytime we ate we thanked God for the meal and asked that it gave out bodies strength to do his will in the world. This kinda felt odd to me. Why didn’t we say thanks to things we were eating. Afterall, it wasn’t God I was putting ketchup on and digging into. He wasn’t the one that had to die so we could live. So I asked her. She gave me that “awww isn’t that cute” smile and calmly told me that animals and plants don’t have souls and anyways: God gave dominion over the earth and all the creatures that dwelled within.

It was the first memory I have of realizing that my mom didn’t know everything. Eh, nobody does.

When Kahuna Nui Lani first taught me the Hunian Grace, I was so greatful. I had always known that animals and plants were sacred and should be treated as partners in this world, instead of resources but I had no idea it could be so simple. No elaborate ritual. Just a wink and a nod and a “hey guys! thanks a million.”

Not only does it honor the being that sacraficed it’s life for us it also becomes more nutritious. I will never forget the story Lani told me about the time he went to the doctors to get some blood work done. The nurse told him he must be taking an awesome selinium suppliment because his levels were really high. He just smiled. If you get moment google selinium. Does a body good :)

We try to buy organic and from companies that don’t brutilize the denizens of the animal and plant kingdom but me personally I don’t look to closely. If anything I would say a chicken that has been stuck in cage all it’s life is in MORE need of the grace.

“To all my relations, thank you for your sacrifice. Unihipili, please just take what we need to be healthy and happy and leave the rest behind”. That’s it. The second part of the wording I’m told is to lose weight or to keep from over eating. From my perspective (being a skinny guy) it’s refering to the contents of the food, digestion and intergration which is under the Unihipili’s control. Take the nutrients, evacuate the junk but that’s just me.

And so, on we go down the path of Huna. I wouldn’t have it any other way. People ask “With so many different religious paths out there, how do you know you are on the right one”? Because the learning of Huna doesn’t feel like learning at all. Feels like remembering something important I had forgotten long, long ago. You too?

Aloha
